Mafic explosive volcanism at Llaima Volcano: 3D x-ray microtomography reconstruction of pyroclasts to constrain shallow conduit processes

چکیده

Abstract Mafic volcanic activity is dominated by effusive to mildly explosive eruptions. Plinian and ignimbrite-forming mafic eruptions, while rare, are also possible; however, the conditions that promote such explosivity still being explored. Eruption style determined ability of gas escape as magma ascends, which tends be easier in low-viscosity, magmas. If permeability sufficiently high reduce bubble overpressure during ascent, volatiles may from magma, inhibiting violent activity. In contrast, if low retain phase within drive fragmentation. Rapid ascent induce disequilibrium crystallization, increasing viscosity affecting network with consequences for permeability, hence, explosivity. To explore strongly volcanism, we combine microlite textural analyses synchrotron x-ray computed microtomography 10 pyroclasts 12.6 ka Curacautín Ignimbrite (Llaima Volcano, Chile). Imaging in 3D under pressure: a decade of high-pressure X-ray microtomography development at GSECARS

The high-pressure X-ray microtomography (HPXMT) apparatus has been operating at the GeoSoilEnviroCARS (GSECARS) bending magnet beamline at the Advanced Photon Source since 2005. By combining the powerful synchrotron X-ray source and fast switching between white (for X-ray diffraction) and monochromatic (for absorption imaging) modes, this technique provides the high-pressure community with a un...

X-ray microtomography in biology.

Progress in high-resolution X-ray microtomography has provided us with a practical approach to determining three-dimensional (3D) structures of opaque samples at micrometer to submicrometer resolution. In this review, we give an introduction to hard X-ray microtomography and its application to the visualization of 3D structures of biological soft tissues. Practical aspects of sample preparation...

Integration of micro-gravity and geodetic data to constrain shallow system mass changes at Krafla Volcano, N Iceland

New and previously published micro-gravity data are combined with InSAR data, precise levelling and GPS measurements to produce a model for the processes operating at Krafla volcano, 20 years after its most recent eruption. The data have been divided into two periods: from 1990 to 1995 and from 1996 to 2003 and show that the rate of deflation at Krafla is decaying exponentially. The net micro-g...
